CAN-TECH™ CATHODE TECHNOLOGY

Designed for efficiency, reliability and extended service life

Can-Tech™ Advanced Cathode Cans are purpose-engineered for monopolar diaphragm electrolysers producing chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen. More than a fabricated cell component, each cathode can integrates electrical, mechanical and process-design features that influence cell voltage, current efficiency, diaphragm stability and operating life.

The technology combines JP Heavy Duty flat-wire screening, engineered internal current-distribution plates, short and homogeneous electrical paths, an explosion-bonded copper-to-steel connection and vertically configured internal channels for effective hydrogen discharge.

ELECTRICAL CURRENT DISTRIBUTION

1. Uniform current. Lower resistive loss.

In a high-current diaphragm cell, electrical resistance through the current path contributes directly to cell voltage. MSR’s Can-Tech™ technology uses centrally positioned current-distribution plates and vertically arranged internal strips to distribute the electrical load through the cathode. The result is excellent current distribution, low electrical resistance, low voltage drop and homogeneous temperature distribution.

2. Stable geometry. Strong diaphragm support.

A diaphragm performs best when the cathode surface beneath it remains strong, flat and dimensionally stable. MSR's Can-Tech® design uses JP Heavy Duty cathode screening to provide that stable foundation.
‍

The screening combines high mechanical strength with a flat, stable cathode surface and is designed to retain its geometry over long operating periods. Its large active surface and small openings provide consistent support for the diaphragm across the cathode area, while helping maintain a stable distance between cathode and anode.

The result is stronger diaphragm support, more stable cell geometry and greater consistency over extended operating campaigns.

3. Hydrogen removal engineered into the cathode.

Hydrogen is generated continuously across the cathode surface. How effectively it is removed matters: restricted gas flow can create pressure fluctuations within the cathode compartment, disturbing the pressure balance that supports stable diaphragm operation.

MSR's Can-Tech® cathode does not treat hydrogen evacuation as an afterthought. Our proprietary internal connection-strip arrangement is deliberately configured vertically, creating a direct, low-resistance path for hydrogen to rise through the cathode and discharge into the hydrogen header.   By combining structural connection and gas evacuation within the same engineered geometry, Can-Tech® technology promotes freer hydrogen movement and more stable pressure conditions inside the cathode compartment.

The result: controlled hydrogen evacuation, reduced pressure fluctuation and a lower risk of diaphragm damage — improving equipment reliability and helping maximise plant availability.

4. Copper-to-steel electrical connection

Low-loss current transfer at a critical interface

In a diaphragm cell, the electrical path is only as efficient as the connections carrying the current. At high operating loads, resistance at the copper-to-steel interface contributes directly to voltage drop — and ultimately to power consumption.
‍

MSR’s Can-Tech® design addresses this critical interface with fully explosion-bonded copper and steel plates. Rather than relying on a conventional mechanical connection between the two materials, the bonded plate creates a robust, fixed electrical interface between the copper conductor and the steel cathode structure.
‍

Directly behind this connection, the current-distribution plate is welded into the cathode, allowing current to transfer efficiently from the copper connection into the internal distribution system.
‍

The result: a secure, low-resistance electrical connection with reduced voltage loss — helping limit avoidable energy consumption and maintain efficient cell performance over extended operating campaigns.
‍

5. Engineered for long operating campaigns.

MSR's Can-Tech® cathode is engineered for extended operating life. Heavy-duty welded steel construction, durable JP Heavy Duty screening and explosion-bonded copper-to-steel hot sides are combined to maintain the cathode's mechanical and electrical performance through prolonged service. The explosion-bonded interface provides a robust connection between the copper conductor and steel cathode structure, while the screening and internal construction are designed to remain stable over extended operating periods.

Can-TechTM cathodes have historically achieved field service lives of up to 20 years, depending on operating conditions and maintenance.

The result: longer service intervals, fewer cathode replacements and lower lifecycle cost, .helping operators extract more value from critical cell-room assets over the long term.
